LAHORE – Pakistani security forces intercepted and shot down three Indian drones that had violated the country’s airspace near Lahore’s Walton and Burki road areas, officials confirmed on Thursday.
The drone incursions were detected by border security personnel during routine surveillance operations. According to military sources, the unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) had penetrated several kilometers into Pakistani territory before being neutralized.
“Our air defense systems successfully tracked and neutralized three unauthorized drones of Indian origin that had crossed the international border,” said a security spokesperson who requested anonymity due to the sensitivity of the matter.
This marks the latest in a series of similar incidents along the Pakistan-India border in recent months, raising concerns about escalating tensions between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
Recovery operation
Security forces have cordoned off the areas where the drones were brought down and launched a recovery operation to collect debris for forensic analysis.
“Initial examination suggests these were surveillance drones equipped with high-resolution cameras,” the spokesperson added. “We are investigating the exact nature and purpose of these violations of Pakistani airspace.”
Local residents reported hearing explosions in the early hours of Thursday morning near Walton and Burki road areas, which officials later confirmed were related to the interception of the drones.
Rising tensions
The incident comes amid already strained relations between Pakistan and India. Pakistani officials have previously accused India of increasing drone activities along the border for surveillance purposes.
The Foreign Office is expected to summon the Indian diplomatic representative to lodge a formal protest over the airspace violations.
Defense analysts suggest that the increasing frequency of such incidents could potentially lead to miscalculations and further deterioration of bilateral relations if not addressed through diplomatic channels.
Pakistani authorities have reiterated their commitment to defending the country’s territorial integrity while urging India to respect international borders and airspace regulations.
